Milk intake in babies

Milk intake in babies

Wondering if your child is getting enough milk to drink during his/her first year is a very common concern. Although your baby cannot express if he or she is hungry there are certain feeding rules that you can follow to feed your baby at the right time & in right quantity.

We at Zahi Butik Organics provide you with a simple guide that tells how much and how often you need to feed your baby. Take a look at the guidelines below:

For new-born babies

New-born babies must be given feeding every 2 to 3 hours. This is because they consume of about 90% of their mother’s breast milk in the first 10 minutes. On the other hand, formula fed babies need to be given feeding every 3 hours. They require about 3 ounces of formula during each feeding. It is very crucial to follow this routine even during the night-time as well. Make sure that you develop a proper feeding schedule for your new-born baby.

For babies who are 1-3 months old

As your baby gets older, his/her appetite will begin to increase. When your baby becomes 3 months old, he/she requires about 5 ounces of milk during every feeding. This has to be repeated about 6 to 8 times every day. Your breast milk production may vary depending upon the need of your baby.

For babies who are 4-6 months old

When your baby gets 4 to 6 months old, he or she can start giving you signals about being hungry. Per feeding can vary between 6 to 8 ounces of milk 5 times a day, depending upon your baby’s appetite. If your baby is 6 months old or elder, you can also introduce cereal as a small snack (1-2 tablespoon) to him/her in between the day. However, cereal should not be an alternative to milk.

For babies who are 6-8 months old

After 6 months, your child can consume nearly 6-8 ounces of breast milk during every feeding. This measurement is in addition to the cereal that you give him/her. You can also give your baby other baby foods as an alternative to cereal as recommended by the paediatrician. Also, ensure that your baby does not consume more than 32 ounces of milk in a day.

You need to understand that your baby’s appetite can be different than other children. Do not over-feed your baby. Feeding your child at wrong intervals should also be avoided. If your baby has been eating less, we recommend you consult your paediatrician.

Refer to the below table for reference:

Age Ounces Per Feeding Number of times
New-born babies 3 ounces Every 2-3 hours
1-3 months 5 ounces 6-8 times a day
4-6 months 6-8 ounces 5 times a day
6-8 months 6-8 ounces 5 times a day
