Relieving constipation in babies

If your baby appears to be in pain constantly while passing stool it could be a sign of constipation. To keep your baby happy and smiling it is important that he or she has a regular bowel movement. If your little one appears to be cranky or irritated most of the times, it is time you make some changes in his or her diet to relieve them from sufferings of constipation.

Keep your baby hydrated
Keeping your baby hydrated or increasing the water consumption is crucial to flush out the bowels regularly. Make sure your baby consumes enough water every day to cure constipation. You can try giving your little one about 3 ounces of water after each feeding or any other time of the day to ensure he or she is well hydrated.

Try including fresh fruit juices in diet
Kids usually like the sweet taste of fruit juices. Fruit juices of pear and apple can be very effective in treating constipation. However, ensure that you feed the juices after regular intervals and small feedings as over consumption of juices can cause problems like gas.

Offer foods that are high in fibre
Foods that are high in fibre should be considered to be added in your little one’s diet if he or she has been suffering from constipation. These foods help in regularizing the stool your child passes and is an effective way of treating constipation in children. Foods such as plums, apricots and peaches are examples of high fibre foods that can avoid constipation.

Change in formula
Every child has a different reaction or digestive power to react to a particular formula and not all babies can easily digest them. You need to try changing the brand of the formula that you are offering your little one. Try a few options to understand which one works best for your child. You can also try giving your baby formulas that are low in lactose or have probiotics in the formula.

Try a physical activity
Making your baby’s body move can also help in the smooth passage of bowels. Lift your little ones leg and try to move them in a circular motion like peddling on a bicycle. This type of activity can help in releasing abdominal pressure and help in regularizing the bowel movements.
